Fiskerton CE Primary School
Remote Education Information for Parents
September 2020 – Revised January 2021
What will the curriculum be?
Teachers will provide a weekly overview with a summary of the lessons that will take place, these will be linked to our school long term plans and cover the National Curriculum. There may be some adaptations in planning for some subjects, such as DT or Art when the resources might not be readily available at home.
How long can I expect work set to take?
It is expected that the children access the home learning daily and try to complete all of the tasks set. This will be 3 hours of learning for EYFS/KS1 children and 4 hours of learning for KS2 children. Every child is different and may take less or more time to complete a task and this may need to be taken into consideration.
We appreciate that there may be exceptional family circumstances but would stress for families to keep the school informed so we can support you as much as possible. We will be happy to help and advise wherever we can.
How will my child access remote education that is provided?
In the event of partial or whole bubble closure it is our priority to provide lessons to support the children through their home learning. Activities will be planned for each class through the online platforms; Tapestry for the Rabbit class and Google Classroom for the other classes in the school. All children have their own individual log in and have been shown how to access the Google platform through their ICT lessons in school. A ‘How to’ guide is available to all parents to support with this https://www.youtube.com/watch?
If my child does not have digital or online access at home, how will you support them?
We recognise that not all families have suitable access at home. At the beginning of the academic year we sent out a letter linked to digital access and have since worked to provide families with the necessary equipment so they can access digital learning at home. In the event of a full lock down, we can, on request supply families with laptops from school on loan for the duration of the lock down. Children will then be able to access the remote learning activities from home.
The school can also be contacted for support with data as we can supply some data that they can use to complete their remote learning.
The school is able to provide printed materials, in circumstances where there is no digital access, that can be collected and returned to school on a weekly basis.
How will my child be taught?
Your child will be taught in a range of ways. Through recorded teacher videos, online videos and resources, worksheets and stories. There will be weekly sessions where the children can speak to their teacher ‘live’ and ask any questions. Children/parents can ask questions or discuss a task through the chat function on Google classroom or through Tapestry and these will be answered as soon as possible.
It will be expected that children will be provided with:
- Daily maths lesson
- Daily English lesson
- Daily phonics lesson (KS1)
- Daily spelling activity (KS2)
- An additional lesson for one of the foundation subjects (linked to our topic work)
Each day the teacher will post new content for the day ahead, scheduled for a 9am start with all the activities ready to be accessed by the children. There will usually be a hand in time for work but it can be handed in after this time. It is important for the work to be handed in everyday to keep on top of the learning.
What are your expectations for engagement and the support for parents to provide at home?
As a school, we expect that the children access all of the work set on a daily basis, in order to meet the statutory requirements. We understand that not all children can access this work independently and the use of the recorded videos will help children, as they can access them any time and as many times as they like. A suggested order of the activities will be given but parents/carers can decide this with their child at home or, if the child is old enough, can create their own timetable for the day.
At school, we are monitoring the work that is completed and if there are any gaps in work we will, in the first instance, contact you by email and again through a telephone call.
Our aim is to contact all families who are remote learning every fortnight to check on well-being and discuss any issues. It is important to also remember that the staff have their own families and may not always be an available contact but will always try to respond to queries if they arise within the school day.
How will you mark my child’s work?
Feedback on activities will take many forms and will be in line with the school marking policy. There will be whole-class feedback on activities, quizzes marked automatically and some comments on individual work.
We will aim to mark one piece of Maths and English work thoroughly and provide feedback to children on a weekly basis. Teachers will also make informal comments on work completed through the chat function - this is private and will only be seen by the staff assigned to that class. The children in the EYFS class will have daily feedback through Tapestry.
How will you support my child with additional needs?
Work will be provided to meet the needs of all children. Planning and activities may be differentiated to meet the needs of individual children and ‘live’ lessons may be needed in order to support these individuals. School will endeavour to contact children with SEND more frequently and discuss any needs that they may have and how best to support them at home.
What will remote education be like for self-isolating pupils?
If pupils are isolating but the majority of their peer group is in school, pupils at home will receive the same learning through the google classroom or tapestry. Their work will be set and marked as it would be in the event of a full closure, with children expected to be fully engaged. School will contact families on a weekly basis as a well-being catch up.
What will happen if there is a staff illness?
In the event of a bubble closure and staff illness, classes may be directed to the online activities through the Oak Academy. These will be selected and shared onto the Google classroom and accessing activities will be the same as before. These may not be fully in line with the usual school long term plans but will only be used if there is a staff illness.
How can you support with remote Learning?
How to documents and video links are available on the school website to support with any technological issues. Further support can be given on request. It is really helpful if we are contacted as issues arise so we can support with this.
What will staff do to support their own knowledge?
As this is new to all of the staff, we are developing our skills all of the time. Teachers discuss regularly and share their knowledge and expertise with each other.
CPD is in place to support teachers
- Setting/marking/monitoring work through google classroom
- Creating and uploading video content
- Using Lexia to support literacy skills
- Using doodle maths for online mathematic skills.
- Developing PE online using REAL PE.
As the year progresses, we will aim to upskill teachers further to improve the delivery of remote learning and are linked to a partner school for digital support and guidance.
